Controversy at International Women's Day Celebration

Updated: May 10

Brighton Women's Centre found themselves being accused of excluding groups of Israeli and Palestinian women from their event at Brighton Dome on the 9th of March.

Protestors: Israel (L), Palestine (R)

Saj Fareed from Parents4Palestine said, "We had been due to have a stall inside today celebrating the women of Palestine but we were told that this would present a security risk and that Brighton Dome had received a complaint against us." She believes the complaint came from a collective of pro Israel protestors who had, themselves, been left out of the celebrations.

The protestors took over the other side of the entrance to the venue and with loud speakers voiced their own feelings that they had been excluded from the event, "How did we get here when feminists are turning their backs on victims of brutal rape?" They are concerned that the women who were taken hostage by Hamas on October 7th are being forgotten at feminist events.

When questioned on the day Brighton Women's Centre declined to comment, however, they did release a written statement, "To be clear we have not taken this decision based on the culture or belief that any organisation has."
